I Want Something Different!!!
You've chosen the perfect gown, you place your order and then as time draws on then panic sets in....what am I going to do with my hair....do I grow it or colour it, wear it up or down....the answer to this is to find a great and trusted hairdresser or good friend who can help you, or better still, an accessories supplier prepared to listen and help you without the hard sell.....
When I am advising brides what to wear I try and find out as much about their wedding dress as possible (of course this is helpful if a picture has been taken!) and then envisage how they would want to look.....an overpowering headress will just say "look at my head" and not the dress...... and it is very doubtful that a bride will spend more on her headress than the dress itself.
If you look at your wedding dress you should get enough clues from this as to what looks good or what designs could be created to go with it. At the moment there is a craze for vintage tiaras but these may not always work with modern designs and too many pearls will lead to tears.....
I always think that the halter neck dress styles and styles which come under the bust look very Grecian and a simple band or double band style looks absolutely fabulous and really complements a simple but elegant style.
Long sleeves with a medieval feel to the dress look great with crown style tiaras and maketh the princess....
Vintage styles such as Grace Kelly styles, 1940's/1950's inspired designs do look good with vintage style headresses but not too ornate or this can look really ageing.....
Similarly the big floaty dresses look gorgeous with pretty flower combs, with hair worn down or up..... anything too frothy and it makes it all too heavy.
But if choosing something fo the hair proves too much, if all else fails, you are not expected to wear anything in the hair although many brides like to have something to draw some attention to the face..... a simple hairvine which can be colour co-ordinated looks wonderful woven into the hair by your hairdresser showing just a small amount of sparkle....after all it's often the only day in a girl's life (after her prom) to wear something which makes her sparkle and feel like a princess....
Look at some of the designs inspired by the likes of Princess Diana which was to take a necklace and weave it into the hair.... Your wedding day is a chance to become creative and if you have a design you have nurtured since you were a child, maybe we can help....
That said I always take time show my brides a selection from the range from simple bands with clear sparkly crystals to the very bold one off pieces I design which once sold are not repeated.
I encourage my brides to try different styles on and we always have fun trying to work hairstyles (I'm not a hairdresser!!) and try to get something to work....it's a lot of fun and we get to know each other quite well!!
I'm now getting good with a sketch pad and if all else fails can pull together some items to make an impromtu design before making it into reality.
Once a design has been chosen I advise brides how to handle their items, especially tiaras as these are often very delicate and could bend or break if abused so best to handle it with care....of course we are on hand should a disaster occur but this has never happened to date.
I am happy to meet at my brides'home with their hairdresser to try styles and will always rise to a challenge should you have a design you would like me to make.
Of course it doesn't end there....we design and make all our jewellery and offer exactly the same service and advice when choosing them.
And finally for the other ladies in the wedding party, be it the mother of the bride (o groom) or bridesmaids it is as important as the outfit itself to not go over the top unless you feel you need to.
Many brides mothers are now steering clear of hats in favour of fascinators (those feathery creations!) as a modern alternative. Again these can be colour co-ordinated using a variety of ingredients from feathers, sinamay, netting and ribbon and can also include the extra sparkly Swarovski crystals to make a statement.
Many bridesmaids are now opting to go for fascinators and pretty combs to complement the outfits. As they say, less is more and quite often simple looks beautiful as the overall effect is sheer elegance rather than something which could be over the top and maybe an afterthought.
Accessories should never be bought in haste as it works out expensive and frustrating if the wrong items have been bought.
